There is this Bear. It haunts me. It stalks me. It's ever on my heels. In my mind, I've turned to confront this beast. In my mind, I've slain this nuisance several times. I've killed it, at times, with my bare hands. Other times, I've killed it with a knife or by bashing its skull with a heavy rock. Again, only in my mind. This Bear is forever behind me. I feel his breathing on my calf as I walk. Some days I'm able to maintain stride without panic, but on others I run.......but only for a bit. For I know the Bear will always be there. Who's the Bear?
Then, there's They. They has always been wiser than any parent I've ever known. They gives the best advice and knows everything. They is smart, while parents and teachers are the obvious idiots. They is always prime choice. Self inflicted blindness they suffer when we enlighten them to the They we know. They pays no bills, provides no shelter, clothing or transportation. I've never seen They come home with groceries or needed supplies. Who is They?
They seems to have more power over society than Truth. Everybody is speaking regurgitations of what They said. We tend to join the millions of They-sayers, without question. They plays on emotions and feelings, much like some preachers and politicians, in order to gain traction, favor, or even profit. They has no problem watching us tear ourselves apart, killing each other because They painted just the right picture in our minds to make us hate, dislike, and distrust one another. Under the influence of They, we feel no pain. We realize not the damage we do to us. If ever and whenever we feel the burn, we only find one good arm left (in most cases the right), with which we amputated the other along with our legs, while intoxicated by They. They is dangerous.
There is an approach we can take when our kids or others come to us with all the great things that They said. It's an approach that most adults should be familiar with by now, especially parents. The example comes from none other that the Truth and the Life, Jesus Christ: "When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 'Who do people say the Son of Man is?' 'They replied, 'Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' 'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?' Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:13-16).'”
We are often quick to respond to controversial, questionable, sensitive, and potentially damning things with what "They" said, but God has no interest in They, when He's dealing with YOU! What's in YOUR heart, He wants to know! What are YOUR thoughts, He wants to hear! Yes, He already knows, but it's not until YOU speak YOU that He can either build a temple of Truth in your heart or begin the demolition process of the falsehoods you've allowed They to establish in His territory. Accountability for YOUR life is all on YOU, not They!!
