I woke up this morning with fried fish and light bread on my mind. I am reminded of those country summer days in Mount Vernon, Alabama as a kid. Uncle Frank would be frying the fish as Aunt Stella prepared it for the grease. There would be coolers full of Shastas, Nehi's, and Faygos of all flavors (OOOH PEACH NEHI!!!!). AND you couldn't miss the coolers of Miller High Life for the grown folks. Throw in some Spades, and maybe a volleyball net, and IT'S ON!!
Good times down South can only be understood those of us who are "Southern By The Grace Of God" as Lewis Grizzard might put it. Walking the railroad tracks, swimming in the creek, walking shirtless and barefoot up and down the dirt roads, fishing anywhere water collects, pickin peas, shuckin corn, drowning in watermelon, catching dragon flies with clothes pins, tire rims for basketball goals, and CHINA BERRY WARS!!! WOW!!
Though the South has its dark history, I am proud of my southern heritage, yet grateful for the balance my mother's northern upbringing afforded us.
HAPPY SATURDAY Y'ALL!!! I LOVE YOU ALL, EACH AND EVERY ONE!!! BE SAFE & STAY WARM!!!
