This is the bridge we use to get to the back half of our backyard. We only cross it every now and then to put out deer corn or clean up fallen trees and branches. A couple of days ago, while working, I looked out to see squirrels using the bridge to go back and forth over the stream. Then, all of a sudden, I see the biggest possum I've ever seen in my life approaching the bridge. Instead of taking the lead of the squirrels, the possum walks on passed the bridge and into the stream to cross it. With my Daisy Powerline 880, I turned him around and directed him away from our yard.
Yesterday, as I thought back to the day before while looking out at our bridge, "the way" came to mind. Then, Matthew 7:13-14 stepped in. It reads, "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only few find it." Why did the possum not take the bridge, as the squirrels did? I have no idea, but I do know that some of us carry on as the squirrels while some of us choose the possum route. In the times we, my family and I, have crossed that narrow strip of wood, none of us have fallen off. To us, "the way" is clear, but we know that it takes focus and balance to get across. Distraction and foolishness cannot take to the bridge and expect clear and dry crossing.
The possum might have felt it was simply easier to cross through the stream, but then he got all wet and muddy. That route also proved dangerous for him. Maybe the possum felt he had not what it takes to balance himself enough to cross the bridge. Who knows? Well, I do know that the narrow path for mankind is a bridge whose name is Jesus, the Enmity of Whom God spoke in Genesis, chapter 3. Believe it or not, Jesus is that actual Word of God made flesh. Jesus is God's Word fulfilled, and the one True example of how we are to live and love. "I am the way, truth, and the life," says Jesus in John 14, "No one comes to the Father except through Me."
I cannot clearly explain this faith and steadfast belief in God's Word, Jesus Christ. As God commanded Moses to say, "I AM has sent me to you", my faith simply IS. God is, therefore I am. Being that He is the source of life, I look to His Word, His instruction, and His Son for direction and understanding. Seeing the world through the lens of Jesus Christ is amazing. Yet, it is also saddening to see the multitudes of possums among us, choosing filth and foolishness over truth and safety. "Pray for discernment" is what my mother used to tell me often. So, I did. From there, came a hunger for God, to know Him, His Word, and His Will. Let that be a starting point, if there is one needed. Pray for discernment.
Lord God, I pray for those who have yet to receive your Way, Jesus Christ, into their lives and hearts as Lord and Savior. Please place a desire in them for Your truth. Draw them in closer to You, God, so that new light and life may be found in them. You are Almighty God, Creator of all things, Giver of Life, and Source of Love. Bless the readers of this post with cultivated minds and hearts to receive the seed of Jesus, the Way. May we all find confidence and boldness to simply live for You, Lord, no matter the ways, whims, and wackiness of this world. Nothing or no one is as great as You God! Nothing or no one is more consistent than You! The world is ever changing, but You are the Great I AM who was, is now, and ever will be, I AM! Thank You God, for taking care of me, my family, my friends and all who are blessed to still be breathing! I love you Lord! I pray this prayer and ask these blessings in Jesus' name. Amen!
