Charlottesville, oh Charlottesville, how my heart aches for thee. Thy loins hath been ravaged by that wild, rabid dog; RACISM! No, I do not plan to continue with bits of old English. My dear Charlottesville, I've read many posts, articles and reports about what went down inside you last weekend. Sickened I was by what I saw and heard. It is not your fault, sweet Charlottesville. For you are merely a city on a map, a home, and even a place of refuge for some. I fell in love with the peace that you and your sister, Crozet, gave me in 2011, during a time I most needed it. The kindness and hospitality found in your IHOP, and in your sister's Mudhouse Coffee Shop & Trailside Coffee Shop will always hold a special place in my heart.
Again, sweet Charlottesville, it's not your fault. I've lived long enough to know that racism is herpes to the body of America. It flares up, unexpectedly, in any part of our body. You are not alone, Charlottesville. Many other cities on the map, homes, and places of refuge have been raped and pillaged by the evil that acts out in the form of racism. It is to be expected in our land, but what angers me most, my sweet, is the Nazi flags being waved and carried by AMERICANS on AMERICAN soil!! My father shared the attached picture with us over the weekend. It is my grandfather, Abraham Williams, Sr., who served and fought for America in the second great World War. Then, I thought about my mother's father who also fought in World War II. Many Americans fought Nazis and everything they stood for which is tyranny, evil, destruction, murder, division, thievery, and so much more that would be seen as abhorrent! Many Americans DIED at the hands of these servers of evil.
I feel the Earth shake under my feet, as every interred World War II veteran turns in his/her grave, to see and know such treasonous actions are allowed on American soil!! It's like clearing the entire front row in church for Satan and his demons. Then again.......nah, not in this post Bryan. Charlottesville, something very foul went down into your innermost parts. No matter your regurgitation, enemas, and stomach pumps, you are forever scarred like Birmingham, Forsyth County, Mobile, Detroit, Rosewood, Ferguson, and many other cities, homes, and places of refuge razed by the ravenous ripples resulting from the rugged rock of racism.
There is a certain truth that the world would rather us not heed. That truth is this, the world is not getting better. It's getting worse. For it is written: "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people (2 Timothy 3:1-5)." Sound familiar? It's evident, in actions all around us.
As I continue to seek God amidst the madness in this world, I'd like to think I understand what it means to carry the weight of the world, but not on my shoulders.......in my heart. There are many of us walking around with 12-ton hearts. It comes from being after God's own heart. It comes from understanding the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. It comes from striving to LOVE as God commands in spite of the world and its ways. Think about it this way. Imagine what must have been going on in the mind and heart of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., daily heeding God's command to LOVE, while evil and hatred, disguised as racism dealt blow after blow. Similar to our Savior, right? Taking blow after blow, yet STILL offering hope, LOVE, and salvation to sinners and the very people who killed Him! I understand now, what I did not, as a kid watching "Jesus of Nazareth", every year before Easter and wondering why He'd never just rid himself and the world of all the evil folks in it. The weight of the world comes upon you the moment you decide to live a life of love and compassion, as God calls us to. For the world will literally sit on you, hoping to crush it out of you.
So, my dear Charlottesville, you have been scarred, but welcome to the club. Will you stand for LOVE now? For Love does not breed, brood, or beget the things seen in your bosom in recent days. I still love you. How unfortunate that your beauty was imposed upon to serve as a stage for Satan to reveal more of his minions.
Those who have ears, let them hear.......
